If you’ve ever considered adopting a child, are you open to adopting any color or race? If so, that’s amazing! But with that in mind, there are some important factors you may not have even thought about. My guest in this episode, Kevin Hofmann, is a transracial adoptee from the late 60s/early 70s, a time when transracial adoption was really a controversial subject. Kevin is here to share his story and offer some advice to those ready to step into an interracial adoption. Be sure to stay tuned for this one…

Kevin is an author of the book, Growing Up Black In White. He is also a diversity trainer, and speaker. In this episode, we discuss transracial adoption, the importance of talking about culture, and faith.

Here are a few highlights from my conversation with Kevin Hofmann:

  • Kevin’s adoption story
  • Things to know about interracial adoption
  • Why it’s important to talk to your kids about race and culture
  • The faith-based community’s role in transracial adoption
  • Making space for adoptees to process their adoption
  • Celebrating differences and celebrating each other
It's Time to Adopt Episode 3 Kevin Hofmann quote

There are so many conversations that are still taboo in the church today, and transracial adoption is one of them. I truly believe that God wants to turn that around, because He has a heart for adoption. If you think about it, He adopted all of us into His family, and He wants us to open our homes to the vulnerable children. As we do that, we need to understand as we step out, there are some things that we just can’t gloss over and pretend like they’re not there. We have to open up our eyes and we have to use wisdom. And we have to love on these kids that don’t look like us in a different way than we love on kids that look like us. If you have a transracial adoption story, I’d love to hear about it.
